Breed and Swap Initiative (Bre-Si)

Breed and Swap Initiative (Bre-Si)

We are on a journey to producing 10,000 Crossbred (First Filial Generation) Dairy Cows by 2027. Most of the milk processed in Nigeria is imported into the country on a daily basis and averagely local/indigenous dairy breeds in Nigeria produce 3 liters of milk per day, while its exotic counterpart can produce up to 40 liters per day averagely. Bre-Si bridges the gap of farmer’s bias around breed improvement programs in the nation that have been frustrated by several past unpleasant experiences of livestock farmers due to failed Artificial Insemination initiatives/programs in Nigeria.

How are we implementing this project?

  • We acquire local/indigenous cow.
  • We breed the cow.
  • We swap the in-calf with another dry local cow and
  • We repeat the process.

Impact of BREED & SWAP Initiative:

  • Increased milk production as a result of more crossbred dairy cows.
  • It eliminates doubt, financial risk and mental stress associated with Artificial Insemination of cows on the part of livestock farmers.
  • Farmers are now assured that the in-calves from our breeding centers are pregnant with F1 crossbreds.
  • Farmers can now plan and estimate their returns/earnings in subsequent months.
  • The cost of our pregnant cows is 65% affordable compared to buying F1 crossbred heifers at the livestock market.
  • Farmers can further reduce the cost of our in-calves by trading off/swapping a healthy local cow from their herd for improved breed. (With this they save another 60% cost).
